Our Story

Buttercloth's journey began with a dream and a vision. Founded by Danh Tran, a Vietnamese immigrant with a passion for fashion, Buttercloth has transformed from a small startup to a multi-million dollar company that's changing the way professionals dress.

Born in Vietnam, Danh grew up working in his family's tailor shop. At 18, he emigrated to the United States, where he pursued his dream of becoming a fashion designer. After graduating top of his class from Otis College, Danh worked as a head designer for major brands before deciding to revolutionize the dress shirt industry.

The Buttercloth Innovation

Frustrated with stiff, uncomfortable dress shirts, Danh set out to create a shirt that felt like a t-shirt but looked like a sophisticated dress shirt. Using a unique blend of long fiber cotton and a proprietary manufacturing process, he developed our signature fabric - Buttercloth.

Our patented 6-way stretch technology allows for maximum movement and comfort, while our Icy Cotton® innovation keeps you cool in warm weather and comfortable in air-conditioned environments. It's 20 times more breathable than polyester, making it perfect for Singapore's tropical climate.

Shark Tank Success and Beyond

In 2018, Buttercloth caught the attention of ABC's Shark Tank. Danh secured a $250,000 deal with investor Robert Herjavec for a 25% stake in the company. This partnership has been instrumental in growing the Buttercloth brand worldwide.

Since our Shark Tank appearance, Buttercloth has experienced explosive growth:

  • In just seven months post-Shark Tank, we generated $3 million in sales and sold 30,000 shirts.
  • By 2022, our net worth exceeded $5 million.

As of 2025, we've achieved over $58 million in lifetime sales.
